9AM, spoken over a megaphone by a man walking up and down the isles of tents: “WAKE UP! WAKE UP! GA WILL START IN 5 MINUTES! IF YOU DO NOT GET UP AND PARTICIPATE THEN WE WILL VOTE TO PUT UP A SNOOPY FLAG!”
The man repeats the threat for several minutes, drawing angry shouts from some tents. While Freedom Plaza is the most organized Occupation I’ve visited, their GA process seems especially drawn out and cumbersome, with sessions often dominated by announcements and rants. Also inhibiting attendance is the fact that they hold two GA’s each day, one in the morning and then again in the evening. I personally see this as a testament to the need for a ratified GA process. There are apparently very few Occupations that have a formalized process, with New York City and Boston among the earliest examples.
For two weeks, the NYCmarch2DC website has drawn an impressive number of positive comments, hundreds in fact. Only one or two have been negative…..that is until now…..after the march has been over for days. And the individuals ruining this near-perfect record are not “get a job” haters……no……..the negativity is internal. A couple marchers have made their personal differences public, engaging in an angry running dialog against each other. Sometimes revolution just seems hopeless.
